DUMP
GLASS WORKSHOP + FOUNDRY
VANCOUVER LANDFILL, DELTA
Located on a closed portion of the Vancouver Landfill, this project repositions the dump as a valuable urban resource - both materially and as a source of renewable energy. Landfill gas, harvested from the anaerobic decomposition of municipal solid waste, can effectively replace a portion of natural gas consumed by nearby industry. To this end, we propose the construction of a metal working and glassblowing studio on the landfill site. The furnaces used in the craft making processes run on methane gas produced at the landfill, while scrap metal and glass separated from the waste stream on site supply the raw material for the artworks.ery.
